As birds are particularly susceptible to disturbance during their breeding season they are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Wintering birds are also vulnerable to disturbance and key feeding/roosting areas should be identified during any survey. Any impact should be fully considered before and during any proposed development.

I have an extensive knowledge of ornithological survey techniques and have been contracted by both consultants and conservation bodies to carry out a wide variety of bird surveys.  These have included:

Common Bird Censuses including territory mapping
Flight line surveys (vantage point) for wind turbine appraisals
Wintering bird surveys (based on WeBS methodology)
Transect surveys

I have also undertaken a number of barn owl surveys in connection with barn conversion proposals.

On completion of these projects I have produced detailed survey reports (samples available on request) which have been subsequently been incorporated into a number of Environmental Impact Assessments.

I have also been contracted to survey and monitor butterfly and dragonfly populations at a number of sites and to carry out phase 1 habitat surveys.
